For such a project, we've found that 5 - 50 lb bags of lawn mix and one 40 lb bag of compost are typically sufficient to achieve a smooth, level surface. Step 2: Choosing the Right Materials For a hole-free, happy lawn, selecting the right fill material is crucial. We recommend a Lawn Mix with a blend of 60% sand and 40% organic matter, such as compost. We are using the Casco Organics Lawn Mix today. This mix is the secret sauce for a durable, long-lasting lawn surface. Sand is not to be overlooked here. The sand provides permanent structure to the hole so it doesn't come back. If you just filled the hole with compost or top soil you would eventually see the hole return as the material becomes compacted and breaks down. We also want to finish up with a top dressing of compost at the end so as to encourage the grass to grow back into our lawn mix. For this we are using Casco Organics Manure Compost today.
Step 3: Prep Your Canvas Before we bring in the Lawn Mix, let's prep the area. Stomp down the grass around the holes, especially in thick lawns like St. Augustine. This step ensures we're filling in the holes, not just covering them up.
Step 4: Fill 'Er Up Now, lay out your bags of Lawn Mix near the holes for easy access. Cut the bags open and fill in the holes, using the back of a hard-tined rake to level the mix with the rest of your lawn. We're looking for "visibly even," not perfection.
Step 5: Microbe Magic Sprinkle a very light layer of high-quality compost, over the Lawn Mix. This introduces beneficial microbes and sets the stage for lush growth. Remember, a little goes a long way here. We are going to want to save the majority of our compost for the end so don't go nuts.
Step 6: Water Works It's time to water! Think of the shoreline at the beach; we want the water to help the sand settle into the low spots, creating a solid base for your lawn. Really flood the area so the sand starts to fluidize and flow around. Once it's all watered in let the Lawn Mix drain a bit.
Step 7: The Finishing Touch Finally, top dress the filled area and extend about 1 foot into the surrounding grass. This encourages the grass to grow back into the filled spots, seamlessly blending the new with the old. For an instant green fix, consider laying sod over the area.
