Fall Is the Best Time to Rebuild Houston Soil — Here's the Plan

Houston lawns spend every summer getting tested — heat, humidity, tropical downpours, and the slow squeeze of alkaline clay under it all. If your St. Augustine limped into late August, this is the article to act on. Because on the Gulf Coast, fall isn't the end of the lawn year. It's the highest-leverage moment in it.
Why fall wins in Houston
Three things line up between September and November that never line up in spring. The soil is still warm, so microbial life and root growth stay in high gear long after air temperatures turn pleasant. The grass shifts energy downward, building the root system and reserves it will live on next summer. And the stress is off — no scorching heat forcing the lawn to spend everything on survival.
Feed the soil in that window and the investment compounds quietly for months. Skip it, and next spring starts from behind no matter what you do in March.
The two-part rebuild

What you won't need: an aerator
Traditional fall advice says rent a core aerator or a dethatching machine.
