Every important thing in lawn care has a season. This one has a window — and in Houston, it's the window that matters most.
The two-week rule
The fall feeding works because warm soil keeps roots and microbes in high gear even as the air turns pleasant. But the biology needs runway: figure at least two weeks of active warm-soil conditions after application for the feeding to be fully taken up and put to work. The practical rule for the Gulf Coast: get it down at least two weeks before nighttime temperatures settle into the 60s for good.
Some years that gives Houston until early November. Some years the first real front shows up in mid-October and the runway shortens fast. That's the honest math: the window is open right now, it will close on its own schedule, and later beats never — but sooner beats later by a widening margin every week.
What the fall feeding actually buys
This isn't a cosmetic application. The September–October feeding is the one that determines how your St. Augustine survives winter and how it wakes up in March. Roots built now are the roots that carry the lawn through dormancy. Reserves banked now are what green up first in spring. Biology fed now keeps working — digesting thatch, opening clay, cycling nutrients — long after the grass itself slows down. Miss it, and next year starts from behind; no spring application fully makes it up.
