The September Feeding — Your Gulf Coast Fall Soil-Rebuilding Checklist

If you only do one thing for your Houston lawn all fall, do it in September. Soil is warm, roots are hungry, and every input you give the ground this month keeps working into November. Here's the whole rebuild as a checklist — five steps, one weekend to start.
Step 1 — Read the lawn (10 minutes)
Walk the yard with last month's report card in mind: where it thinned, where water pooled, where footprints lingered. Those are your priority zones — they'll get the same treatment as everything else, just with a little extra attention and water.
Step 2 — Top-dress the rough spots with living compost
For the zones that suffered most, a half-inch of quality leaf-mold compost is the fastest biology transplant there is. It brings organic matter, moisture-holding, and a resident microbe population in one pass. Step 4 — Water it in, then water less often

Step 5 — Put the machines away
No core aerator. No dethatching machine. On St. Augustine over Gulf Coast clay, mechanical dethatching does real damage and core aeration rarely pays off.
